Purpose of the group

The Community Land Group explores whether land in community or partner ownership could support affordable housing and other locally identified needs.

Housing need, land availability, planning, finance and long-term management all require evidence. The group should not imply that a site, partner, funding package or delivery timetable is confirmed until the relevant organisations have agreed it.

How community-led housing can work

Possible models include affordable rent, self-build plots, co-housing and reuse of vacant property. Each has different ownership, eligibility, cost and management implications.

A credible proposal would need a current housing-needs assessment, site appraisal, community engagement, a viable business case and the necessary approvals. Public updates should make clear which stage has been reached.
