About the woodland

The community purchase in 2007 included 46 acres of hill ground south of Cultybraggan Camp. The Woodland Group later developed a planting and management plan supported by Scottish Forestry.

The aim is a mixed native woodland with areas of open ground retained for habitat and landscape value. Species used include birch, oak, alder, Scots pine, aspen, rowan, willow and hazel.

Managing a young woodland

Establishing woodland involves more than planting. Ongoing work can include checking young trees, maintaining guards and fences, controlling competing vegetation, caring for paths and recording wildlife.

Public access and practical work must take account of weather, ground conditions, tools and the needs of the site. Current arrangements should be confirmed before a visit or volunteer session.
